What is the Rogers RO4830™ laminate?

RO4830™ thermoset laminates are particularly well-suited for cost-sensitive millimeter-wave applications, such as 76-81 GHz automotive radar sensors. They offer a reliable and cost-effective alternative to traditional PTFE-based laminates. The laminates exhibit a dielectric constant of 3.24 at 77 GHz, which is marginally higher than that of PTFE-woven glass laminates. The LoPro® reverse-treated copper foil cladding enhances the performance of the laminates, resulting in an excellent insertion loss of 2.2 dB per inch at 77 GHz.

The laminates are available in dielectric thicknesses of 0.005 inches and 0.0094 inches, specifically designed for the cap layer in FR-4 multi-layer board designs commonly utilized in 76-81 GHz automotive radar sensor PCB applications. The use of flat woven e-glass and a filler with smaller, more uniform particle size enhances laser drilling performance. The laminates incorporate the same advanced antioxidant package as RO4835™ laminates, providing significantly greater resistance to oxidation compared to other hydrocarbon-based laminate materials (based on studies conducted by Rogers Corporation). These laminates can be fabricated using standard epoxy/glass (FR-4) processes and are compatible with RO4400™ bond ply. Additionally, they possess the UL 94V-0 flame retardant rating and are compatible with lead-free soldering processes.

Applications of the Rogers RO4830™ Laminate

One of the primary uses of Rogers RO4830™ laminates is in the development of 76-81 GHz Automotive Radar Sensors. These sensors are crucial for advanced driver-assistance systems, enabling functions like collision avoidance, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keeping assistance. The RO4830™ laminate’s low loss and consistent dielectric properties ensure the reliability and accuracy of radar signals, which is critical in real-time, high-speed automotive applications.

Additionally, the material is highly favored in high-frequency RF and microwave communications, including 5G infrastructure and satellite communications. Its ability to maintain stable performance at high frequencies makes it an ideal choice for modern electronic devices that require high precision and consistent operation.

Manufacturing advantages of Rogers RO4830™ laminate

Beyond its electrical prowess, RO4830™ simplifies PCB fabrication while lowering costs compared to traditional PTFE-based laminates:

Reduced Overall Cost vs. PTFE Options

Unlike costly PTFE materials that require specialized processing, RO4830™ leverages a hydrocarbon ceramic system compatible with standard FR-4 manufacturing processes. This reduces production time, complexity, and total costs.

Superior Laser Drilling Performance

The material’s compatibility with laser drilling enables precise microvia formation, essential for high-density interconnect (HDI) designs. Facilitates intricate design requirements, allowing for greater innovation in circuit layouts.

Consistent Within-Sheet Dielectric Constant

Ensures a consistent dielectric constant across each sheet, contributing to repeatable and predictable circuit performance. Simplifies the quality control process by reducing variability between different parts of the same sheet, ensuring uniformity throughout the production run.
